Back to the Coast...

We spent a few days with my cousin in San Francisco and then caught the train south to LA where we had planned to join up with the Sierra Cascades route which would take us into Reno (via the Death Ride). However, after two days on that route we were hot, sunburned and dehydrated.

We made it to Cali!

Well, the Oregon coast was SO much more fun than any part of Washington, even when it was raining out. We started out in Portland and rode to the coast (80 miles) in one day with my brother. His wife and kids met us at the beach with all of our things and a HUGE feast!

Since then we have been working our way south in 5 - 65 mile days which have been heavily dependent on the weather. When it rains it pours with strong head winds. But when the sun is out (which only happened once or twice) we are graced with beautiful weather and a tail wind!

Vancouver to Portland

Well, we made it to Portland. It was a very soggy wet week of riding (and a few other modes of transport) but we've found ourselves in Portland on a sunny day. Today might actually be the first day where we didn't wake up to rain.

The hills along the coast are STEEP. Steeper than anything I've ridden in Colorado. But I can feel my legs getting stronger.

The Death Train

Well, those of you who saw me at Saturday's ride noticed I was riding a (partially) loaded touring bike. With "the Death Train" just over three weeks away I figured it was time to try out the touring bike for real. And while there are a few adjustments that need to be made, I think it will suit me quite nicely for 7 weeks this summer.

Vic and I purchased one-way tickets to Vancouver today. We leave on Sunday May 16th for the 40+ hour bus ride to Canada. One night there and then we'll be on our way towards Mexico. Everything we need on our bikes.
